It's a damn shame that many a profoundly gifted jazz––particularly contemporary or "soul" jazz––musician is forced to dumb down her/his music in order to compete with many shallow-but-popular musicians who have hoodwinked the audience with a highly "cabaret" version of the music. The African beginnings of this music, that inspired the likes of Brubeck and Coltrane, is in peril of being lost forever.
OK, I feel better now.

Tomorrow's CEO

A white mom encourages her cute little toddler to go ahead and take the travel cups and such (on the shelf at Starbucks) and rearrange them. She makes a fun little Montessori-like exercise out of it. It's fun to watch.

The mom of the little black boy, naturally because of her own experience in a culture where as a child she dare not try something like that-lest her parents be invited to leave and never return, grabs his lil hand and reprimands him, "I told you not to touch anything!" After all, this mom's parents would have been amongst the first of their color to even be allowed in the store.

Which toddler will more likely grow up with the ease and confidence, that "go-get-em spirit," to be a CEO?

Just observing life with the gift of this black perspective.

When is it day??

In honor of the Passover, I submit the following old Jewish story:
An old rabbi once asked his students how one could recognize the time when night ends and day begins. "is it when, from a great distance, you can tell a dog from a sheep?" one student asked. "No," said the rabbi. "Is it when, from a great distance, you can tell a date palm from a fig tree?" another student asked. "No," said the rabbi. "Then when is it?" the students asked. "It is when you look into the face of any human creature and see your brother or your sister there. Until then, night is still with us."

Render unto "Caesar?"

May I submit the following rewrite of the popular view on PAYING TAXES. It is a sacred privilege for me, a "high" wage earner, to support the poor. To be sure that they have access to the goods and services (not to mention fire, police, roads, public transportation, etc.) that I could somehow buy.

When the bible speaks of "render unto Caesar," remember that in that type of system (with an actual non-elected dictator, very little of that money went to the poor. So in a real sense,in a democracy, when I pay my taxes (along with my tithes and offerings) I am "rendering unto God," because each human being was created in God's image.

Is there corruption? Absolutely, in both religious and political spheres--and in my own heart. But that won't keep me from JOYOUSLY signing that tithe check... And my tax return. And I will be ever diligent as I cast my vote.

"God, grant conviction and guidance to those to whom it falls to appropriate taxes for the needs of we the people." Amen

Verse and Voice from @Sojourners.com

Verse of the Day

"But ask the animals, and they will teach you; the birds of the air, and they will tell you; ask the plants of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?" - Job 12:7-9

Voice of the Day

"Let us ask God to make us true in our love, to make us sacrificial beings, for it seems to me that sacrifice is only love put into action."

- Elizabeth of the Trinity

Prayer of the Day

O God, we cry out to you for the things that are on your heart: for peace, for justice, for love, and for holiness. These are far too scarce in the world you have entrusted to us. Bring about your purpose, as you have done in ways often subtle and unseen. Amen.
