Encouragement is a Boomerang

This following letter from a kind woman named Brenda really encouraged and blessed me. This is an interesting (insert "challenging") period of transition for those of us who assumed that we would always have a viable and vibrant venue for selling these things we call recordings! We also assumed that people would always clamor for good music and not mind paying for it... and if they shared it, the sharee would then go and buy it too! [BTW, I realize and am grateful for the fact that if you're reading this, you're probably not guilty of taking advantage of music at the expense of folks trying to make an honest living with their talents. And I do realize that we're in a recession!]

Well, since those things (big jazz sections in record stores like Tower and Circuit City) began to disappear, we artists have needed to keep a stiff upper lip and dig deep for the reasons for which we began this journey, with I might add, no giant expectations of fame or fortune, but simply to get in the game! I personally wanted to be Sly Stone, or Donnie Hathaway, or Hank Crawford! And last time I checked, none of them retired with lots and lots of dough.

All that to say that the following letter of encouragement came at a really sweet time for me. We're doing fine and haven't missed a beat, thank God. And I wish this same encouragement to all the great artists and musicians I know during this special season, along with my sincere wishes for peace (mostly inner peace) and more and more opportunities to make more of these things we call recordings!

    Dear Kirk,

Recently I had the pleasure of a visit from my brother, Michael. Coupled with that blessed visit was an awesome blessed gift given to me by my brother. The gift came in a package of 2 entitled 'Kirk Whalum, The Gospel According To Jazz, Chapters II & III. In as much, I was thrilled to my visceral self. Wow! You get it! Our Creator blessed you with this stellar gift; then you, in turn, bless us by sharing it with us, as well as praising and glorifying Him simultaneously. I extend to you a heartfelt thanks and appreciation.

May Father God caress you to His bosom and show you and your entire family much favor.

    In Christ,

    Brenda
