Beauty from Ashes

This is a poem written by a friend of mine named Tony who is homeless.  

A HOMELESS TRAMP

So I walk these streets feeling hurt and alone,
But yet I'm happy that I'm not dead and gone,
My mind is still wit' me and I'm thankful for that,
Cause I see so many talking to themselves and
really believe someone is talking back
So I say to you people in these short words I've spoke
A homeless tramp may seem down but he is still filled with hope.

Happy New Year... Again!

Just a note to say how grateful I am to share this planet with the likes of you!  I'm always astonished at the kindness of those of you I bump into (like on last week's Wayman Tisdale Smooth Cruise to the Caribbean!!!) and hear such enthusiasm for my music and that of friends like Gerald Albright.


Speaking of Gerald, if you haven't seen advertising for the SAX FOR STAX FEATURING GERALD ALBRIGHT AND KIRK WHALUM in your town... then we need to make some calls!  Find out who brings good music to town and give us a call at 818-222-3790!  Gerald and I think this is going to be the tour of a lifetime... and we've seen a few tours!

Much love and gratitude to Michael Lazaroff and Mr. Tisdale for including us on the cruise this year.  What a joy!  It was so wonderful to hang with all the folks who are passionate about this music and could break free to spend that time with us.  And I'll have to say that sitting in with Chaka Khan was the highlight for me!!  Though I'll say that Arlington Jones (piano) played a set that rock that whole ship!

Gifts that last

This pendant was given to me by two folks who only stayed in the "fan" category for about a month – then they became life-long friends – over 25 years ago.  The three rubies represent a song they both remember from when I first got started, a song I wrote for my "Prime Rib," Ruby Ruby Ruby!  The beautiful gold setting and the lovely diamond remind me of "unmerited favor," better known in the bible as grace.  I have always hesitated to wear it because it's one of a kind.  I thank God for Lee and Geri Bertillion and the graceful design that Lee put into this piece.  I will always love you!
