Wow!

This is the view from the Timpanogos High School campus in Salt Lake City where I'm about to do a workshop on "Spirituality in Jazz."

Nice posts, by the way, Timpanogos high school is in Orem, Utah, not Salt Lake. And FYI, it is named for the large mountain that is to the north of Cascade, the mountain featured in your picture. Glad that you had a nice time.

Hey Cody -- I'm so glad you were helped by what I shared. I had a great time there. I also learned a lot from Ed Calle who is one of my inspirations. I'm really impressed with Caleb and The Music School. Maybe we can open one in Memphis!

Cheers,

Kirk

That was the best clinic of the whole festival, you are an amazing person Mr. Whalum. The entire time I had chills, and it made me want to become a professional musician even more.

Thank You

Kirk,
Thanks for the summary of what you taught/demonstrated...

In my book I take the concepts of syncopation, improvisation, and call & Response and then apply them to prayer, bible study and what it means to live in Christian community as an ensemble.

I'm hoping that when it comes out next Feb. that God will use it to reach a lot of people and bring about some new ways of viewing the Christian faith in America.

blessings,
robert

Bryan it was my sincere honor to interact with your lovely family. Thanks for shuttling us around! You've got a great guitar player for the next generation of jazz lovers!

Kirk,

We thoroughly enjoyed meeting you at the Crescent Jazz Festival. My family and I are all very impressed with you as a musician and a person. You're one in a million!

I thank GOD often for blessing America through African Americans with the gift of Jazz. Thank you Kirk, for your efforts in helping us to not forget that!

I challenged them as to "What or Who is your message" having dubbed them "COMMUNICATORS."

I told them initially that I would recite to them a passage in 4 different languages:

I began with:
"El SeƱor es mi Pastor, nada me falta..." then
"L"Eternel es mon Berger, je ne manquerai de rein... then
"The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want..."

Then I played a melody for them!

I asked them which of the four "languages" would reach the most people! Then I asked them to consider what or whom they would communicate.

I confessed to them that my "anhelo" (yearning) is to communicate The Lord Jesus and his incomprehensible love to a world who may not realize just yet how desperately they need that love (and forgiveness and acceptance).

Kirk,

I'm jealous...I would love to have heard what you said. I'm currently finishing a manuscript for Zondervan on what a jazz-shaped Christian faith would look like (this is the first of two books). We should compare notes...

Beautiful! God IS amazing!

I have to repent of my envy right now! That's a beautiful scene. May the Holy Spirit guide you as you share in the workshop.
